Bigger and Better: What to Expect from the 2020 Porsche 911

Almost a month ago, Porsche unveiled its new and improved 2020 Porsche 911. Dubbed as the “922 generation,” this updated model is slightly bigger than its predecessor. It also boasts a souped-up set of safety tech. Here’s what you can expect from the new 911.

Still a Modern Classic

Whether you’re on the busy streets of New York or cruising through the interstate, the 2020 Porsche 911’s sleek and familiar exterior is sure to turn heads. Porsche describes the new look as “more muscular” compared with previous models. If “muscular” means streamlined and clean, they’re spot-on. The new 911 looks like it came straight out of an episode of the Jetsons. It has a smooth finish, minimalistic exterior, and futuristic interior.

Wider, Heavier, and Stronger

Durability and speed is nothing new to the 911 series. The new model’s chassis is about 1.8 inches wider than its 2018 predecessor. Better joining methods have also made this car 5% more rigid than the previous model. It’s heavier by more than 158 pounds. This weight change, however, doesn’t affect performance. This generation saw a 23 horsepower increase compared with the previous model. It can reach zero to 60 in just 3.2 seconds, with track speeds as fast as 191 miles per hour.

Faster Brakes

All that speed won’t mean anything without effective brakes to keep you safe on the road or the track. The 2020 model is the first of the 911s to have an electronic brake booster. This booster makes braking 10% quicker than the previous model. It is bundled with a trick lightweight brake-pedal, which eases weight by 41%. The rear spoiler assists deceleration by acting as an airbrake if needed.

Introducing Wet Mode

Car driving through a puddleDriving in the pouring rain can be scary sometimes, especially if you have other passengers with you. The new 911 ensures stability in slippery roads with its “Wet Mode” feature. There are two acoustic sensors behind each front wheel of the 2020 911. These sensors are made to notify you to turn on “Wet Mode” when it detects rain splatter. Once this is activated, the whole system is adjusted to increase stability. The car will run slower, but you don’t have to fight the wheel to keep yourself safe.

Better Driver Assistance

One of the biggest leaps that the new 911 took is for its driver assistance technology. It’s the first in its line of models to feature sensors that make your driving experience safe. The 2020 911 has lane-keep assist to make sure you don’t swerve at the wrong time. It has a collision warning and avoidance system that warns you of an oncoming vehicle or impending impact. If you fail to respond, the car automatically punches the brakes for you. There is also a rear turn system and a night vision camera to help you with parking. For entertainment and vehicle control, there is a dash display with a touch panel in the middle of the dashboard.

The 2020 Porsche 911 keeps its model line’s classic silhouette while bringing improved performance and new features to the table. You’ll find that driving the new 911 feels like an upgrade from your current ride.

The slightly wider and heavier body allows for a more rigid framework without sacrificing speed. It’s also safer because of its faster brakes, wet mode, and other safety sensors. The new tech that it comes with points to hybridization soon.

It’s obvious. For Porsche, the race is far from over.
